Cottonwood Farm
Welcome to Cottonwood Farm online.
2007 marks our 23rd year of operating of Cottonwood Farm. On behalf of Sarah, Marty and Terry Hunt we would like to give a special thank you to all our customers who have become friends, and to each of our employees who have become like family. None of this would be possible without you.
Now for over two decades at Cottonwood Farm our only goal remains to breed, raise and sell outstanding equine athletes. Our plan to accomplish that goal is simply summarized in our motto -
"Raising the standard of breeding excellence...again"
Over the years we have been blessed with some great stallions, outstanding broodmares, and a tremendous group of employees who share that commitment and dedication.
We always welcome the opportunity to show you first hand what Cottonwood Farm is all about.
The farm yearlings are in being prepped for our upcoming sale. Yearlings are now being shown in the afternoons from Monday through Saturday. Weather permitting, yearlings may also be turned out for prospective buyers to evaluate. Please call Brent Johnson (630) 204-3395 to schedule an appointment to see the farm's consignment.
Cottonwood sired horses are winning all over North America. On our Recent Winners page we have highlighted some of these winners. Space doesn't allow us to list them all, so we only show those horses winning a purse of at least $7,500.
Our 14th annual yearling sale will be held on September 9th. Catalogs are now available at the Chicagoland tracks as well as DuQuoin. If you have already requested a catalog through our website, you should have received your copy directly from the printer. If you haven't already been added to the list, we will send your catalog to you from the farm office.
Before that time you can access the yearling sale entries online by hip number, dam, sire or consignor. If you want all the details, the pedigree pages are also available here at our online catalog (this is a large pdf file, so please be patient while it loads). These files will also be updated periodically leading up to the sale date, so please check back for any changes in performance records. Those updates will be highlighted in red print in the catalog pages.
The foaling season is now over but you can still take a peek in the nursery and pick your future champions by visiting our 2007 Foal Arrivals page.
Until you can get here in person please enjoy our website, and feel free to contact us with any questions.

September 9, 2007 is the date of our 14th annual Cottonwood Farm Yearling Sale
We invite you to make plans to attend our 14th annual yearling sale. Cottonwood Farm, our partners and guest consignors will be selling some outstanding prospects again this year.
Our yearling sale catalogs are out. You can pick up a copy at the DuQuoin State Fair, or at any of the Illinois race tracks. We cannot add any new names to the direct mail list at this time, but we would be happy to send a copy to you from the farm. We will need you to complete the catalog request form shown below to make sure that we have your proper contact information. Thanks.
If you can't wait for your copy, we also have the complete pedigrees available through our online catalog. This is a large pdf file that will take some time to load, so please be patient. The online catalog will also be updated periodically right up to sale time - changes and updates will be highlighted in red print in the pedigree pages.
We also have the yearlings in the sale summarized by hip number, dam, sire and consignor.
Pedigree pages and indices are created in PDF format. You may need to download the newest free version of Adobe Acrobat to make full use of the forms.

Cardinal final at Balmoral
Sunday, May 27, 2007 - by Tom Kelley, publicity director, Balmoral Park
Crete, IL --- Despite less than ideal conditions fans were treated to a big Saturday night card at Balmoral Park featuring some of the Prairie State’s top trotters and pacers. With six Illinois conceived and foaled stake match-ups and a Free For All on the program the action was non-stop for the Memorial Day weekend crowd.
The biggest surprise came in the $50,400 Cardinal Final for 3-year-old pacing colts as 30-1 outsider Booze Cruzin came charging through the stretch to win by a length in 1:54.2. Despite leaving from post position 10, driver Ryan Anderson did a magnificent job of finding a spot in mid-pack. With the pole sitting Brother Vinny (Mike Oosting) and One Park Place (Sam Widger) battling tooth and nail through splits of :27.4, :55.1 and 1:24.3, the race shaped up perfectly for a late rusher.

Bob Black's Red Barn Stable - cleaning up!
Thursday, May 3, 2007 - by Darin Zoccali, USTA Web Newsroom senior correspondent
It is no secret that most owners view harness racing as a business, an opportunity to make money in a more exciting and dramatic fashion. Like any business, an owner requires success to stay in the business. The exception lies in Bob Black, owner of Crawdad.
Lisa Photo.
It was nearly three decades ago that Bob Black was working as a teacher, making $503 per month, doing something he really did not enjoy. Upon leaving that career, Bob’s wife literally threw a checkbook at him and said, “Go get yourself a hobby.”
That checkbook contained $7,500. When Bob was through with it, just $300 remained. “We are going to race down the highway with the windows down and throw our dollars in a ditch,” Bob told his wife. “I bought a horse.”

Home Bed Advantage makes first road trip
Monday, April 23, 2007 - by Harness Racing Communications, a division of the USTA
Dave McCaffrey has trained the winners of more than 1,100 races and nearly $9 million in purses, and with the exception of a handful of starts in Canada, he’s done it all in Illinois. Now, he’s making his first extended trip away from home with, ironically, Home Bed Advantage, who is expected among the entries for the Berry’s Creek elimination races Saturday at the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey. The $225,000 final is May 5.
“We’ll both be kind of starry-eyed and looking at the big buildings,” said McCaffrey, a 39-year-old native of Davenport, Iowa. “When you’re in Illinois, you’re kind of on an island. You see out into North America and the Meadowlands has always been the mecca of harness racing. It’s a real honor to be taking a horse out there like Home Bed Advantage.”

My Boy David wins FFA, pushes career earnings over $900,000
Saturday, April 07, 2007 - by Tom Kelley, Balmoral Park Publicity Director
One of Illinois “favorite sons” made his return to the Prairie State a successful one as Shirley Le Vin’s My Boy David knocked off six rivals in the $21,500 Three Olives Free For All. Confidently handled by driver Ryan Anderson, My Boy David pulled the pocket going to the half-mile mark and never looked back in route to a one-length triumph in a speedy 1:52.0.
Under a hand drive from Anderson through the lane the Homer Hochstetler trainee held last week’s FFA winner Canyon Wind (Joe Anderson) at bay to pick up his first win of the season. Chief Red Cloud N (Del Chupp) was third.
With the winner’s share of $12,040 the four-year-old son of Cole Muffler, last season’s Langley Memorial winner and Illinois Horse of the Year, has $900,884 in career earnings. In 45 career starts My Boy David now has 12 wins, 16 second place finishes, and 7 thirds to go along with his world record 1:47.4 mark.
Crawdad named Horse of the Month
Monday, April 02, 2007 - by John Pawlak, marketing director, USTA
Columbus, OH --- The coincidence of a birth date shared by a pacer and one of his owners was the first step on a journey leading to the Meadowlands’ winner’s circle, following the $121,300 Four Leaf Clover Series Final -- and now to the title of U.S. Trotting Association Horse of the Month for March.
Crawdad, a 4-year-old gelding, bred in Illinois by Cottonwood Farm, capped a successful month by winning the Four Leaf Clover Final on his birth date, March 24, the same natal anniversary as one of his owners, Jennifer Black, one of five members of the Red Barn Stable.

Cole Muffler has strong showing at the Tattersalls sale at the Meadowlands
Monday January 15, 2007
East Rutherford, NJ --- The Tattersalls January Select Mixed Sale, held Monday, Jan. 15, in the race paddock at the Meadowlands, was buoyed by two conditions: the influx of purse money at tracks with expanded gaming and a catalog full of top racing prospects.
“The strength of the market is outstanding right now, especially for racehorses,” said Tattersalls general manager Geoffrey Stein. “I think the market is going to intensify as purses increase. I don’t think prices are going down.”
As a result, 319 horses went through the ring for bids of slightly more than $7.8 million. A total of 11 horses brought prices of $100,000 or more and four of those were sold for $200,000 or more.
Glass Pack, a three year old gelding by Cole Muffler sold to Peter Heffering for $200,000 - tied as the highest price pacer, and was the highest price paid for any sophomore race horse.
Wonderful One, a four year old horse by Cole Muffler brought a $180,000 bid from Heffering and was the fourth highest priced pacer in the sale.
Life In My Day, a four year old gelding by Cole Muffler sold for $70,000 to Carmine Fusco.
Altogether there were eight sons and daughters of Cole Muffler sold as racehorses that day, they totaled $582,000 for an average sale price of $72,750.
